Zilker Botanical Gardens Community Gardens VISTA
 
 
 
The City of Austin AmeriCorps VISTA Program works with City departments and local nonprofits to build capacity, in order to provide resources and services to the Austin neighborhoods and communities that may otherwise be left behind by Austin's historic disparities and future growth. The AmeriCorps Members serving with the City of Austin AmeriCorps VISTA Program work in such diverse fields as education, health, waste reduction, and housing to cover the myriad ways poverty affects these neighborhoods and communities.

Member Duties : Introduce and coordinate language access services to City of Austin community gardens. Create a training program for new community garden Language Ambassadors. Provide the community garden permit process, contractual documents, outreach materials, and signage in multiple languages. Support the efforts of community gardens and nonprofit organizations to develop and offer programming to gardeners and low-income neighbors. Compile a resource guide to promote the offered classes, workshops, and other programs. Organize interpreters and translators to provide these programs in multiple languages. Create and implement uniform structure and processes to mitigate discriminatory practices in community gardens. Provide new permit guide to community members interested in starting gardens. Create guidelines for garden steering committees. Create equity-based training system for new steering committee members and guide members in creating a vision for their garden.
