Opportunity Council - GV Community Coordinator VISTA

Work with a local non-profit rooted in sustainable agriculture and cultivated by Peer Support. We work to end the isolation that leads to suicide by creating a lasting community of both veterans and civilians. Growing Veterans operates two farms, one on Whidbey Island and one in Lynden, that work as a community outdoor center for both veterans and civilians. We use these spaces to bring together the community and break down barriers and stigmas surrounding the veteran experience. At the same time, our farms utilize Dirt Therapy to aid in the transition of returning to civilian life from military service and nurture mental health in both veterans and civilians. Trauma is relative and we find we have a lot to learn from each other. All of the food grown at our farms is donated to local food banks. We also host educational workshops, internships, and educational training opportunities to increase the agricultural knowledge of veterans. We work to build community to end the isolation that leads to suicide.

Member Duties : As the Community Coordinator, you will help to develop outreach and engagement of our volunteer program. We are launching a new "Come Get Grounded" campaign for 2023 to increase community involvement on our farm. This will include a new series of educational workshops and family-friendly activities. You will help to create, schedule, market, and engage with the community for these workshops and activities. We will be launching a new Cultivator program to create a set framework around our agricultural educational program. As a VISTA you will help to develop, track, monitor, evaluate, and implement our Cultivator program specifically designed for veterans. There will be a lot of creative freedom in both of these endeavors as we create new programs. As a VISTA, you will also help to integrate our Peer Support Training into our volunteer, educational, and farm operations. You will help with mental health and food access for veterans and their families.
