UNO Social Mobility Pathways Service Learning VISTA program

The University of Nebraska of Omaha (UNO is a metropolitan university that serves over 15,000 students, of whom 41% are first-generation, 26.4% are students of color, and/or 28% are from low-income families. At UNO, we call these students “at-promise” and know that they similarly struggle to persist and graduate compared to their peers. There are multiple recognized "high impact" strategies, such as learning communities and first-year experiences, that support the persistence and graduation rates of at-promise students and increase the likelihood of their long-term social mobility. Another is providing these students with opportunities to have meaningful, high-impact, experiential learning experiences such as volunteering, service learning, and internships that build their social capital, connect them with community leaders, and assist them in translating these experiences for their career development needs. UNO's own data on the impact of these practices on its at-promise populations is very limited, especially regarding their social mobility. The Social Mobility Pathways Service Learning VISTA will focus their efforts on promoting service learning with at-promise populations, researching and sharing best practices, collecting data, and analyzing the effects of experiential learning on retention and graduation rates. As a member of the UNO Service Learning Academy team, they will also assess the impact of these activities on community partner organizations and the populations they serve. UNO MFP VISTAs work in the UNO Community Engagement Center, a unique, collaborative facility focused on connecting students, faculty and staff with community needs through partnerships, research, and learning.
