UNO Social Mobility Pathways Volunteer/Career Dev. VISTA

The University of Nebraska of Omaha (UNO is a metropolitan university that serves over 15,000 students, of whom 41% are first-generation, 26.4% are students of color, and/or 28% are from low-income families. At UNO, we call these students “at-promise” and know that they similarly struggle to persist and graduate compared to their peers. There are multiple recognized "high impact" strategies, such as learning communities and first-year experiences, that support the persistence and graduation rates of at-promise students and increase the likelihood of their long-term social mobility. Another is providing these students with opportunities to have meaningful, high-impact, experiential learning experiences such as volunteering, service learning, and internships that build their social capital, connect them with community leaders, and assist them in translating these experiences for their career development needs. The UNO Social Mobility Pathways Volunteer and Career Development VISTA will increase the social mobility of UNO's at-opportunity students by 1) promoting and increasing their participation in volunteerism and 2) enabling these students to build social capital and career skills knowledge that will make them successful in their job seeking. Working within UNO's Office of Engagement (engage.unomaha.edu) and under the supervision of UNO's Volunteer and Civic Engagement Coordinator, the VISTA will achieve these objectives by expanding the range of community partners who support UNO's days of service, improving how UNO shares volunteering opportunities with students, developing surveys that assess student and partner satisfaction and creating materials that promote volunteerism and career-development skills and knowledge it creates.
