The mission of The Mentoring Project (TMP) is to increase postsecondary degree completion of marginalized student populations. The Mentoring Project pairs trained community volunteer mentors with adult low-income college students to provide guidance as they navigate their path to postsecondary degree or certificate completion. The program primarily supports BIPOC community college students. All programming and mentoring is conducted on-line using Zoom and other electronic methods. The Mentoring Project is a start-up non-profit (501)(c)(3). Founded in 2021, The Mentoring Project has just completed its first year of success – with 30 student-mentor pairs. In 2022-23, the goal is to double the number of students served VISTA members will provide the critical momentum, initiative, and outreach to sustain and expand the program. The VISTA AmeriCorps will be key contributors to building program infrastructure and increasing capacity to serve. This position will work closely with partner organization Seattle Colleges.

Member Duties : Recruit and onboard mentor volunteers by processing background checks, serve as key contact on program operations & expectations, and best practices. Promote benefits of mentorship and how support from a mentor can provide critical assistance in overcoming obstacles faced by low income, adult students and provide a longer-term impact that will lead to students’ academic success and career readiness. Coordinate virtual mentor trainings on student affairs topics such as mental health, financial aid & academic advising, facilitate monthly virtual mentor chat groups. Work with the Student Manager to monitor student-mentor relationships and provide guidance on best practices; review and assess mentor/student pairs; and assign new pairs. Expand and develop the career advisor network. Obtain digital and written student testimonials to use for promotional materials. Analyze data to generate periodic reports on key program metrics, present and report program results on occasion.
