Urban Corps Capacity Building Project

Urban Corps of San Diego County is a certified local conservation corps whose mission is to provide young adults with the tools to expand their career opportunities through education, life skills training and paid work experience on projects that benefit our communities. Urban Corps has given thousands of underserved, low-income young adults ages 18-26 the opportunity to improve themselves while improving their own communities. Urban Corps’ unique work-learn program allows youth to finish high school while earning a paycheck, learning real-world job skills and giving back to the community through professional services. We provide a second chance at a high school education and paid job training designed to encourage civic engagement, responsibility and self-sufficiency. Urban Corps has two offices in San Diego - one in Old Town San Diego and one in North County (Escondido). The start and end dates for this project would be July 31 2023 through July 29 2024. We can offer use of a company vehicle (if you have a drivers license and can pass a behind the wheel test), access to bus passes and both facilities are near public transportation sessions. For more information or questions email Lauren Welch at lwelch@urbancorps.org

Member Duties : Our VISTA Project aims to help ensure that 18-to-26 year old young adults in San Diego have access to Urban Corps’ dual work-learn program to support anti-poverty goals, furthering their educational attainment and career and college opportunities. We are recruiting three VISTA Members who will support the capacity building efforts of Urban Corps. Members will research and establish community partnerships, enact recruitment strategies, and support enrichment class opportunities once students are enrolled. We are looking for people who are go-getters to be out in the community, getting to know partners and finding opportunities. You should be a "people person." The VISTAs will review existing policies, connect with community members and organizations, and build a capacity building activity/project to support the community connections to Urban Corps. There will be several off-site networking activities and meetings the VISTA will attend.
