*MCVP – Land to Hand: Produce Prescription VISTA

The overall goal of this VISTA project is to increase food access for low-income families in Flathead County by developing systems to increase the effectiveness and accessibility of Land to Hand program activities. In the Columbia Falls School District, 49% of students qualify for free or reduced and at some schools the rate is as high as 64%. The rate of teen homelessness is rising in the towns served by the Columbia Falls School District. County-wide, the SNAP rate is roughly 14%, which translates to at least 14,000 individuals struggling to have enough food to eat. Flathead county has seen a huge increase in living costs, primarily housing, over the past several years which has been aggravated by the pandemic. Many families and individuals are forced to choose between housing and food. This has been exacerbated by low wages and a lack of available and affordable childcare which make living affordably difficult. Therefore, food security has become more acute in the last year. Land to Hand’s weekend backpack program has seen a significant uptick in the number of participating children since the beginning of the pandemic. This VISTA project will move low-income Flathead County residents out of poverty by developing systems to increase Land to Hand’s food access programs and their effectiveness resulting in more community members able to combat food insecurity. Located in Whitefish, MT!
