2022-2023 Community Change Agent VISTA
 
 
 
This Community Change Agent VISTA will be hosted by One Level in Decatur, IL. One Level is a part of the Housing Action AmeriCorps Network, an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. As such, this position will receive customized training, support, guidance, and networking opportunities, in addition to the traditional opportunities for AmeriCorps VISTA positions. The mission of One Level is to assure no neighborhood community is left behind and that every neighborhood can aspire to excellence in the development of their living. This position aims to increase employment and household incomes through job training and placement while simultaneously building quality housing to replace deteriorated and dilapidated housing. The project will have four major elements: 1) Conduct asset mapping of resident needs and household income. 2) Determine the needs for housing improvements on a block-by-block basis; 3) Prepare property improvement plans with possible assistance identified; 4) Help organize the neighborhood to perform block revitalizations and help them apply for jobs and assistance. The ideal candidate will be a good communicator, skilled in group facilitation, familiar with community development theory, has strong networking organizing skills, can evaluate data, and can work within the community to mentor individuals. Lastly, the ability to develop a newsletter would be an asset too. One Level will provide the AmeriCorps member with the training, support, and guidance to successfully complete the described objectives and work tasks described in this position. Most of the work will be in neighborhoods in Decatur Township.

Member Duties : The member will be expected to achieve the following objectives: 1) Design and conduct neighborhood questionnaires by way of door-to-door interviews. 2) Organize small neighborhood block face meetings, to prepare reports on the needs and assets of the neighborhoods. 3) Collaborate with One Level Inspectors to prepare property development plans and help recruit trainees to provide construction labor on properties and also provide opportunities for trainees to purchase said properties. 4) Help with neighborhood organizations with the ultimate goal of creating a Community Development Corporation.
