NYC Mesh Broadband NYC AmeriCorps VISTA Community Specialist

In the 21st century, the internet has become infrastructure that facilitates community, wealth, and health development—yet access to this essential infrastructure has not been equally distributed. NYC Mesh attempts to address both the cost and the quality of internet access in disinvested communities across NYC. We are a volunteer-based charitable organization with the goal of creating an open, resilient, and net-neutral community-owned and managed network that is accessible and affordable to all New Yorkers. We are the nation's largest and most robust community internet network -- serving thousands of NYC households regardless of their ability to pay. In the year of service VISTA members will establish local “Mesh Rooms” that provide training/support centers for local community members. In the first few months of service, VISTA members will lead community outreach efforts to recruit participants from the surrounding community and from partner organizations. Once mesh rooms are established, VISTA members will establish regularly scheduled technological support sessions and training for recruited participants. VISTA members assigned to this project will develop strong community outreach skills, leadership, teaching experience, and communication skills, as well as a deeper understanding of technical skills through their development of training materials.
