Climate and Energy Justice Associate

The Climate and Energy Justice VISTA will help the state’s Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Commission (Commission) operationalize its mission through the Climate Ready Hawaii VISTA cohort through work at the Hawaii Green Infrastructure Authority (HGIA). The mission is to promote ambitious, climate-neutral, culturally responsive strategies for climate change adaptation and mitigation in a manner that is clean, equitable and resilient. The Climate and Energy Justice VISTA will conduct community outreach and energy education on behalf of the Hawaii Green Infrastructure Authority (HGIA), and the Commission, to lift vulnerable and underserved communities out of energy poverty by helping them lower their energy costs. With the highest utility rates in the nation, the energy burden for vulnerable households and communities in Hawaii is significant and further exacerbated by the impacts of climate change. As an example, 85% of the rooftops in Hau’ula, a coastal community on O'ahu, would not withstand a Category 1 hurricane. HGIA provides non-traditional financing to LMI households, nonprofits, small businesses and multi-family rental projects utilizing electric utility bill payment history and estimated energy savings to qualify for financing to install solar PV and energy efficiency measures. The VISTA will play a key role for HGIA to reach energy stakeholders, contractors and underserved ratepayers to help them understand the nuances and benefits of transitioning to clean energy. Activities include participating in community trade fairs and expos, presenting to community groups, canvassing and communicating via traditional (e.g., newspaper, radio, etc.) and non-traditional (e.g., social media, YouTube, etc.) media platforms.
