NCNMEDD_Town of Taos_Civics, Opportunity, and Media VISTA

The purpose of Civics and Opportunity Through Media Program is to utilize a VISTA member to act as liaison and coordinator between the Town of Taos and the youth media nonprofit True Kids 1 to produce media that will support entrepreneurialism and civic engagement in the Town of Taos. This project will address poverty by supporting entrepreneurial job creation and the efforts of the Town of Taos to reduce barriers to small business startups. The VISTA member will be involved in the creation of a “small-business hub” located at 115 Civic Plaza drive. The small-business hub will host several local business organizations such as Taos MainStreet, the Taos County Chamber of Commerce, and more. The intent is to create a single location that supports northern New Mexicans’ innate entrepreneurial ability. By supporting community members’ dreams of becoming their own boss, this project will create opportunity for Taoseños to realize their aspirations through engaging media productions to inspire entrepreneurs. COMP will serve several different populations. First, through coordination with True Kids 1, youth will have an opportunity to create professional media productions and build the technical skills necessary to find meaningful employment within the growing film industry. Second, this project will serve entrepreneurs of all types by easing the burden of small business startups through “how-to” videos such as: applying for a business license, understanding the sign permit ordinance, finding relevant Town ordinances, etc. This project is a subsite in the North Central New Mexico Economic Development District (NCNMEDD) VISTA project; the Town of Taos subsite will work with and will be directly supervised by the NCNMEDD.

Member Duties : 1. Learn about the functions of local government including, but not limited to, zoning maps, zoning restrictions, sign ordinances, budgets, meetings, business licenses, the Inspection of Public Records Act (IPRA), relevant business ordinances, etc. Work directly with mayor and administrative offices to gather information for public education videos. 2. Develop scripts and talking points to be conveyed to the public regarding the function of local government. 3. Coordinate with True Kids 1 to turn the scripts/talking points into engaging media productions. 4. Publicize the media productions using social media, print media, and other forms of communication.
