NCNMEDD-STEM Santa Fe_Advancing STEM to Promote Equity VISTA

Why are girls, students from low-income communities, and students of color severely under-represented in STEM fields? Some simply label this as an “achievement gap”, placing the blame on the students. STEM Santa Fe was formed based on the premise that this under-representation reflects an “opportunity gap.” Students simply do not have the same access to role models or relevant opportunities to get excited by STEM education or to learn about careers in STEM. STEM Santa Fe is a northern New Mexico’s leader in providing underserved youth an inspiration and a pathway to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers. We provide engaging project-based programming with real-world relevance (e.g., one team of students developed an app to help community members navigate the healthcare system). STEM Santa Fe deploys a network of STEM professionals who volunteer to serve as mentors and role models. We collaborate with school districts, higher education institutions and other organizations to reach out to low-income families and to increase diversity in STEM by offering our programs at low to no cost to families. As our project grows we need additional staff to join our team to help build and support our objectives, which include an anti-poverty focus, attention to community empowerment, aim to support capacity building, and search for sustainable solutions.

Member Duties : The growth and demand for our innovative STEM programming has created a new set of challenges, especially with respect to capacity building and advancing our long-term vision for sustainability. We are seeking a VISTA member to join our team to help us address these challenges. Being part of a team also means learning about the goals and structure of a nonprofit and pitching in various ways as needed. Specific duties of the Vista partner will depend on their skills, interests and career goals. For example, if the partner is fluent in Spanish, they may be active in community engagement and help create a Spanish language version of our newsletter. Other activities include: 1. Helping set up management systems for volunteers and grants (using our management system for donors as a model). 2. Working with the CEO on fundraising and developing grant plans. 3. Helping organize program assessment information for reports. 4. Initiating collaborations with local businesses and organizations.
