Community Programs Coordinator (FSI VISTA - AzFBN/PVCFB)

The PV Community Food Bank’s (PVCFB) mission is to provide food assistance to individuals and families living in northeast Phoenix, within the 98 square mile boundaries of the Paradise Valley Unified School District (PVUSD), who are experiencing food insecurity and hunger on a daily basis. Located within the PVUSD boundary is an area that is the lowest income area of the Northeast Valley consisting of a large immigrant population and high levels of crime. The food bank has developed a program called “Palomino Outreach Program” (POP). Once a week PVCFB delivers food to the individuals and families who are referred to the food bank. Within the 98 square mile boundary, there are many Senior Citizen Centers, large pockets of poorly kept rental neighborhoods, and individual rental homes maintained for homeless veterans. The PVCFB seeks to identify all of the unmet, food security-related needs that currently exist for the neighborhoods the PVCFB serves, which is currently unclear as there are isolated areas that have not been included in any census program. The goal of the proposed VISTA project will be to research the 98 square miles PVCFB serves in order to locate these unnoticed pockets of individuals and families. The Palomino Outreach Program will target the 2 square miles that is the Palomino neighborhood. The remaining 96 square miles that the food bank serves is known as the “Neighbors Caring, Neighbors Sharing” Outreach Program. Once the isolated pockets of neighborhoods are identified, like the Palomino neighborhood, the next phase of the VISTA project will be to increase the capacity of the food bank by developing a sustainable program for PVCFB to serve these areas and provide food assistance to them. The final phase of the VISTA project will be to increase fundraising efforts and apply for grants to supplement the additional expense of expanding PVCFB’s program reach.
