Stewards VISTA: NEEF - Biscayne National Park

The goal of the program is to engage with 21st CCLC sites in Miami Dade County through a partnership with the YMCA of South Florida. Our target audience for this program are Miami-Dade County Public School students, grades K-5, in Title 1 schools where more than half of the students are English Language Learners. The program is an in-depth extension of our education program and gives Biscayne the opportunity to work with student groups multiple times throughout the school year. The students will learn application of scientific methods and field research techniques. VISTA will develop program where student groups will assist with real time data collection and will help quantify marine debris found on the shoreline of Elliot Key. As the students conduct field research, they will apply the scientific method alongside the tools/skills they have developed and acquired during the pre-visits to their school. After the park visit, the students will utilize a citizen science based mobile app “Clean Swell” to input their acquired data. This will encourage the students to become environmental stewards within their community and take independent action into continuing this type of work even after the program has finished. Towards the end of the program the students will collaborate create a project that is scientifically or artistically structured to identify potential projects, solutions, or community incentives to better combat marine debris in general within their community.
