VISTA Grief Resource & Suicide Awareness Coordinator
Sharing Kindness, was seeded from the shared devastation of suicide and grief. We are pleased to add that we now tend a thriving community through empathy, education, and courageous conversation. We began by providing grief support programs for suicide loss survivors, because suicide loss survivors are at increased risk of suicide. Grief programming in this group is also suicide prevention. There is no grief support available for most deaths occurring outside of the hospice setting and were needed to expand our programming. We now provide grief support programming across the life span, with an emphasis on children, youth, young adults and families. Unaddressed childhood grief and trauma can lead to short- and long-term difficulties, including decreased academic performance, mental health issues, entry into the juvenile justice system, suicide, poverty and early mortality. A report, "Dying from Inequality", showed that financial instability and poverty can increase suicide risk. Suicide is a major inequality issue. Timely support introduced at critical junctures aids in healthy development. Using the Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model we estimate there are at least 4,233 bereaved children, teens, and young adults on Cape Cod. We set a goal of significantly increasing the number of evidence based peer grief support programs we offer by early 2023. In addition, we created our regions first suicide awareness walk, held each May, and partner with schools and other community organizations to raise suicide awareness. Our community members are at more than twice the risk of dying from suicide as other parts of the state. The VISTA will learn about nonprofit capacity building, sustain ongoing programming, assist in information tabulation and grant writing, develop multiple communication management skills as we grow a healthier community and, importantly, become fluent in safe and courageous conversation around mental health, suicide and grief.
