MAKE Projects Organizational Development Specialist

MAKE Projects stands for Merging Agriculture, Kitchens and Employment Projects. We are a unique non-profit organization based in San Diego, California and our mission is to equip low-income refugee and immigrant women and youth with the job readiness skills to achieve their dreams. We operate in a social enterprise model, using an outdoor restaurant, commercial kitchen and urban farm to create a paid work experience for refugee and immigrant trainees. While the trainees gain valuable on-the-job learning and real work experience, our team also provides additional job skills coaching, resume development, mock interview practice and help grow their confidence and public speaking skills. When they complete an eight- or twelve-week training program with us, our staff assist them in a customized job search process towards their next permanent job in the US. We are located in beautiful, sunny San Diego and specially, in the North Park neighborhood which is full of restaurants and stores. This neighborhood is a bit upscale compared to the adjacent working-class neighborhood of City Heights where many of our low-income refugee and immigrant participant live. This cross-cultural geography forms the diverse and inclusive environment of MAKE Projects. MAKE Projects was first developed at the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in San Diego in 2015 and spun off in 2021 as its own organization that is fiscally-sponsored by Mission Edge San Diego, a nonprofit and business incubator. MAKE Projects works closely with all of San Diego’s refugee agencies and a strong network of social service agencies and community partners from recruitment to supportive service referrals. We want to see our clients thrive and there are many amazing organizations in San Diego working together in different ways.
