This entry level course from OCHIN's Public Health AmeriCorps program helps interested applicants create promising career paths and more resilient communities. After successfully completing this specialized training, participate in an on-site, full-time practicum with one of 10 OCHIN member health centers in six states (Oregon, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio, North Carolina, and Massachusetts). · Play a pivotal role in advancing health equity and strengthening the circle of community care. · Learn to advocate on behalf of patients and their families—facilitating timely access to key community resources including information, insurance, food, housing, and more. · Special emphasis on working in community-based settings—including communication barriers; health model characteristics; and impact of culture and socioeconomic status on health. · Hybrid course format combines self-learning exercises with instructor-led, on-demand virtual modules. It’s designed for students of any background, including current industry professionals or those newer to health care. Member Duties : Community Health Workers (e.g., Contact Tracer, Immunization Outreach Coordinator, Promotores de Salud) role is to engage patient communities. Community health workers promote health by assisting individuals to adopt healthy behaviors and serve as advocates by assisting in communicating with health care providers or social service agencies. Contact tracers track down those that may have been exposed to the virus, provide disease and transmission information, and collect relevant data on demographics, living arrangements, daily activities, symptoms, and underlying medical conditions. Immunization outreach coordinators help implement strategies for reaching priority groups for COVID-19 vaccinations and keeping people up to date on all their immunizations. Skills to be developed: communication and interpersonal skills, persuasiveness, empathy and cultural competence, organization, critical thinking, computer proficiency, data management.
