CLLS AmeriCorps Initiative

California Library Literacy Services (CLLS) provides no-cost education services for adults who want help with their reading, writing, digital literacy, numeracy, speaking, and listening skills. The CLLS AmeriCorps initiative will place 70 AmeriCorps members (40 member service years: 20 full-time, 30 half-time, 20 quarter-time) who will partner with CLLS adult literacy programs to provide pandemic recovery services, help adult learners reach their goals, promote community engagement, and increase volunteer recruitment to provide needed services in 25 public libraries across California. At the end of the first program year, the AmeriCorps members will be responsible for helping 25 public libraries build the capacity of their adult and family literacy programs, increasing program reach and effectiveness in 12 libraries, and supporting 300 learners. In addition, the AmeriCorps members will leverage an additional 3,000 volunteers, who will be engaged in adult and family literacy tutoring and program support. The program’s goals are to provide COVID-19 recovery, education for adult learners, support for communities with persistent unemployment, financial literacy training, community engagement, and capacity building for library literacy programs.
