2022-23 New York State Food Security & Child Nutrition VISTA
 
 
 
The New York State Food Security & Child Nutrition VISTA assignment is hosted by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) Office of Child Nutrition and part of the New York State COVID-19 Response VISTA Project. The Food Security VISTA member will build the capacity of NYSED Office of Child Nutrition to ensure that low-income students have access to nutritious and appealing school lunches by collecting best practices from Child Nutrition program operators, assessing resources of school meal providers, and developing evaluation tools, training opportunities and promotional items and implementing a strategy to increase participation in the National School Lunch Program. The project sponsor will provide the VISTA member placed at NYSED Office of Child Nutrition a bus pass to travel to and from the project site.

Member Duties : • Identify and engage with School Food Authorities (SFAs) that have successful school meal programs through various methods including on-site visits to learn and obtain best practices and successful strategies that could be implemented at other SFAs. • Develop in-depth evaluation tools that will be used to evaluate other SFAs school meal program operations and tools that can be used to provide feedback to SFAs. • Prepare/develop training opportunities, evaluation tools and promotional items for SFAs to increase participation in school meal programs.
