Greater Austin Reading Coalition Literacy Services VISTA
 
 
 
The City of Austin AmeriCorps VISTA Program works with City departments and local nonprofits to build capacity, in order to provide resources and services to the Austin neighborhoods and communities that may otherwise be left behind by Austin's historic disparities and future growth. The AmeriCorps members serving with the City of Austin AmeriCorps VISTA Program work in such diverse fields as education, health, waste reduction, and housing to cover the myriad ways poverty affects these neighborhoods and communities.

Member Duties : Research existing grade level reading (K-3rd) tutoring programs and literacy services within Travis County to identify literacy deserts and emerging community needs. Identify existing programs and community organizations that are actively addressing grade level reading challenges in Travis County among children in K-3rd grade living in disenfranchised communities. Create a service map to identify disenfranchised communities within Travis County that do not have access to high quality, high intensity tutoring or grade level reading support services. Identify barriers for quality and high intensity literacy programs in disenfranchised communities and create an action plan to address them. Review data from the 2022 GARC Summer Literacy program and determine ways to improve services for the Summer 2023 tutoring program. Increase community partnerships between the Greater Austin Reading Coalition and educational organizations/agencies in Travis County.
