Stewards VISTA: NEEF - Cuyahoga Valley National Park

The goal of this program is to increase standards-based STEM literacy in local urban students through tree planting and soil monitoring in Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CUVA) while helping develop a scientifically robust and replicable community science monitoring project. Native tree planting is a critical part of CUVA’s environmental rehabilitation work and the park seeks to establish effective monitoring around the success of tree planting as well as strong and scientifically rigorous citizen science projects. The target audience is middle school students from urban Cleveland neighborhoods who are interested spending time outdoors, exploring green spaces, or studying STEM. This audience is historically under-represented among visitors to public lands and in STEM fields. We hope that this program will help increase their affinity for and comfort in nature as well as their interest in pursuing a career in natural resources. Cuyahoga Valley National Park, the Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park (known as the Conservancy), and the Greater Cleveland Neighborhood Association (GCNCA, a 21st CCLC) have a long history of successful partnerships. Past collaborations include semi-annual “Days of Learning” programs. During these programs hundreds of children from GCNCA have come to the park to explore different areas, learn about potential careers, participate in recreation activities, and volunteer. Last year we worked with GCNCA on this project for the first time. Due to the success of that collaboration, we are pleased to partner with them for a second year. VISTA will greatly increase our ability to develop an effective long-term program, especially in conjunction with the GCNCA. This program will build on the strengths of the partners and provide an opportunity to establish a replicable citizen science project that the park and partners can use in the future.
