Want to make a real difference in the world? Come to Wayland, KY to live in the heart of beautiful Appalachia; experience the rich culture and loving people as you help build a new future for their community. Enjoy the outdoors in a classic American small-town rich with history as you become an indispensable part of building a new Wayland. Kentucky has a long history of being a large producer of coal. In recent times coal has taken a downturn, leading to high unemployment and a mass migration out of coal country. Wayland has been working towards transitioning away from coal into new exciting economic possibilities. Eastern Kentucky’s greatest resource is its people. They foster an atmosphere of kindness and genuine concern. With help from local residents, you will help them develop concepts, feasibility studies, and plans for downtown revitalization projects, and then help them find funding and coordinate them to see them come to life! This opportunity should not be understated. Having this year in Wayland will allow you to have real influence as to the direction that a whole community will take to rebuild itself. You will get to work shoulder to shoulder with all the big movers and shakers in the area giving you invaluable experiences. These experiences will look great on a resume and will also give you life-skills that will continue with you forever. We are looking for someone who is not afraid to make working relationships with others, especially those who may be culturally different from themselves. Keeping organized is a must with the ability to articulate the vision that you and others will share for Wayland. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Powerpoint and the ability to use technology is a must. Multiple start dates are available, and will be determined upon selection.

Member Duties : Are you interested in architecture and design, or helping communities revitalize downtown buildings? This position will give you the opportunity to recruit and coordinate volunteers for downtown development projects in Wayland KY like designing a 1950s diner and reimagining a good use for a vacant high school building. You will get to learn from and collaborate with experienced consultants to develop plans and feasibility studies. You will also fundraise and develop funding proposals for the downtown development projects and then share stories to promote the town. It is our hope that you will have a truly life-changing experience. The professional experience you will gain working with consultants will be a great boost to your resume, and you will get to enjoy the love and support that comes from living in the small town of Wayland.
