AmeriCorps Behavioral Health Services Program

This program will prepare public health and social work professionals and community leaders to respond to underserved community needs as it relates to substance use disorder and mental health issues during the ongoing pandemic and future crises. This will expand infrastructure in Philadelphia, so organizations can respond effectively to vulnerable Philadelphia residents during crises. AmeriCorps Member Responsibilities include: screen community members for behavioral health services, mental health and/or substance use; providing outreach to participants at treatment facilities, in the community, which includes recovery houses, homes and workplaces to support engagement in programs; helping patients connect with transportation resources and other supportive services, as necessary; identifying community linkages to support recovery efforts which includes job readiness, educational aspirations, housing, and family support. AmeriCorps members will also engage in monthly professional development sessions on topics such as health equity, food insecurity, housing needs, and motivational interviewing. To supplement their service, members will meet bi-weekly with AmeriCorps supervisors to debrief on their experiences at their placement site and discuss their personal goals, successes, and areas of improvement.
