VISTA Farm to School Coordinator

Farm to School (F2S) enriches the connection communities have with fresh, healthy food and local food producers by changing food purchasing and education practices at schools and early care and education settings. The Sedro-Woolley F2S program brings the agricultural richness of Skagit County, WA to youth in the Sedro-Woolley School District through school gardens and experiential education, as well as through scratch-cooking in the school cafeterias as part of larger policy, system, and environmental change in the food system. By collaborating with United General District 304’s F2S Program Coordinator, school staff, and other partners, to enhance F2S’s infrastructure, a VISTA Farm to School Coordinator will increase volunteer involvement and community support for vital nutrition education and food access programs for youth. The VISTA member will continue to develop and document systems related to volunteer management and program fundraising, research and suggest potential program integration within schools, and create replicable outreach materials for Sedro-Woolley F2S to ensure program longevity and diffusion to all schools. The VISTA can also research and document options for curricula delivered by teachers & volunteers across the districts' elementary schools and collate best-practice guidance and goals for the school’s Food Services department around sourcing and preparing local foods. Sedro-Woolley Farm to School operates under United General District 304's vision of Building Healthier Communities, whose priority outcomes are achieved in the following core program areas: Active Living, Community & Professional Education, Engaged Youth & Communities, Healthy Eating, Thriving Children & Families, and Stewarding Assets & Opportunities. These program areas cumulatively create healthy environments and foster individual, family, and community protective factors that promote wellbeing.
