Center for Digital Inclusion-Famicos Foundation, VISTA

‘Digital Equity’ is a condition in which all individuals and communities have the information technology capacity needed for full participation in our society, democracy, and economy. As an AmeriCorps VISTA with Famicos Foundation, you will be a part of an agency wide initiative to connect our communities with digital resources. While the digital divide was present and pervasive throughout Cleveland, Ohio prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the stay-at-home orders that pushed more activities online than ever quickly exposed to the world what many of us knew already— the internet and its benefits are not accessible to all Clevelanders. The digital divide disproportionately affects communities of color. Black and Hispanic households lack in-home internet access at higher rates than white households earning comparable incomes and 82% of white households report owning a desktop or laptop computer, compared with just 58% of blacks and 57% of Hispanics. The impact of the digital divide among affordable housing residents during is profound. Seniors, who are more likely to face barriers to digital access, experience the mental and physical impact of social isolation. As telemedicine has become a prevalent model for people to manage their health needs, seniors who lack digital access and literacy are left behind. Famicos Foundation is committed to prioritizing digital inclusion in the communities we serve. Therefore, we’re looking for a talented AmeriCorps VISTA to dedicate one year to building digital equity and inclusion in the communities we serve.
