24-25 GA Afterschool STEAM Expansion VISTA

Georgia Statewide Afterschool Network is embarking on exciting new work to expand the amount of STEM opportunities in afterschool programs. High quality afterschool programs have shown to increase student academic performance, behavioral improvements and have been a factor in supporting regular school attendance. These programs also provide excellent opportunities for youth to explore new topics without the typical time constraints that occur during the school day. To increase these types of opportunities for children and youth throughout the state, partnerships need to be developed and resource gaps need to be identified. The STEM Afterschool Expansion VISTA will work to build partnerships with STEM-related businesses, industry partners, higher education officials, and schools to increase coordination and improve the quality of afterschool programs. Afterschool Alliance VISTAs are eligible for the following benefits: up to $1000/mo for housing, $50/mo for gas, and $150/mo for groceries.

Member Duties : 1) Assessing the STEAM learning landscape in afterschool and summer learning in Georgia; 2) Establishing a strong community outreach and engagement strategy that communicates the benefits of including STEAM in afterschool programs; 3) Increasing access to high-quality afterschool and summer programs that incorporate STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) fields and connect STEAM careers; and 4) Creating a strong professional learning system to support increased and enhanced STEAM programming in afterschool and summer learning programs through communications, outreach and professional learning opportunities in STEAM education, financial literacy, and the entrepreneurial mindset.
