Community Relations & Volunteer Specialist

Galveston has one of the highest poverty rates in Texas, with nearly 25% of residents living in poverty. As the only city-wide, non-zip code restricted, professionally case-managed food pantry on the island, our Beacon of Hope center and its services are a critical lifeline for thousands of hungry Galveston families each year. The VISTA will build capacity by recruiting volunteers for the newly expanded client choice pantry, community food distributions, and develop ongoing individual and group volunteer opportunities. The VISTA will enhance the volunteer and fundraising efforts of the Galveston area and establish a robust volunteer program which will support staff in alleviating poverty on the island. With support from the VISTA, the Beacon of Hope Center will be able to amplify the number of clients served and the impact made on residents in and around Galveston Island. This VISTA position is a part of Catholic Charities USA’s Family Strengthening Program, a national intermediary project. As a member, you will meet virtually with VISTA Leaders and other VISTAs serving throughout the country, all focused on alleviating poverty.

Member Duties : The VISTA will increase the number of clients able to be served by recruiting 30 individual volunteers and 6 volunteer service groups over the course of one year, with the VISTA in charge of clearing them per agency policies. The VISTA will work with staff to develop ongoing volunteer opportunities to support the alleviation of poverty by staffing the client choice food pantry. They will develop 5 opportunities for individual volunteers and 3 opportunities for groups. The VISTA will enhance the peer-to-peer fundraising effort with a goal of $5,000. The VISTA position will eventually turn into a paid staff position, so the VISTA will establish relationships and connections with supporters, community partners, and volunteers.
