Volunteer Capacity Building at SHFB- Families/Children VISTA

The Volunteer Department supports direct-service and other community engagement opportunities that advance the mission and impact of Second Harvest Foodbank. Our program includes large scale volunteer operations in our distribution center 6 days per week as well as support of our mobile pantry programs and skilled volunteer opportunities. Our department seeks to create an inclusive, welcoming, and safe environment that encourages a sense of civic identity for all. We promote volunteerism that recognizes community wisdom and assets, is respectful, and culturally responsive. Volunteers contribute over 40,000 hours per year and contribute to approximately 25% of our overall work at the organization.

Member Duties : Build capacity of the Food Bank to support family-friendly volunteer opportunities as a way to introduce young people to issues of food security and what they can do to support neighbors in need, and to help build an ethic of volunteerism. Pilot family-based volunteerism through creating a series of “special events” -- i.e. one-time volunteer opportunities, specifically aimed at families. Create materials and training guides needed for long-term implementation of family-based volunteerism at the Food Bank. Youth will need different training and oversight than adult volunteers, and different age youth have different capacities. After the pilot, materials should be created that are targeted at different age groups.
