Volunteer Capacity Building at SHFB- Volunteer Diversity

The Volunteer Department supports direct-service and other community engagement opportunities that advance the mission and impact of Second Harvest Foodbank. Our program includes large scale volunteer operations in our distribution center 6 days per week as well as support of our mobile pantry programs and skilled volunteer opportunities. Our department seeks to create an inclusive, welcoming, and safe environment that encourages a sense of civic identity for all. We promote volunteerism that recognizes community wisdom and assets, is respectful, and culturally responsive. Volunteers contribute over 40,000 hours per year and contribute to approximately 25% of our overall work at the organization.

Member Duties : Build capacity of the Food Bank to support volunteer opportunities for racially and culturally-diverse audiences-- in particular, non-English, or non-native English speakers (particularly Spanish and Hmong speakers)-- as a way to build bridges with these communities, better engage them in the work of the food bank, and create a more inclusive community of volunteers. Pilot volunteerism with these language diverse audiences through creating a series of “special events” -- i.e. one-time volunteer opportunities-- in partnership with organizations who already engage with these communities, such as the Hmong institute. These pilots will help to both gauge interest, and understand the needs of both Food Bank staff and the families so everyone has a positive and impactful experience. Create materials and training guides needed for long-term implementation of language and culturally diverse volunteerism at the Food Bank.
