Refugee Youth Services VISTA

Refugee Youth VISTA works with the Refugee Youth Services Supervisor, case managers, and other CCS staff to promote the importance of education, and to ensure all refugee youth resettled with Catholic Community Services of Utah (CCS) graduate from high school and enroll in higher education. Activities will be focused on school navigation/readiness, academic performance, social health & integration, parent engagement, and advocacy. Our program aims to develop a comprehensive outreach strategy for staff to educate refugee families about the importance of early childhood education. This strategy will communicate the benefits of high-quality early learning programs to refugee families and enroll refugee children in high-quality preschool programs. In 2020, Catholic Community Services of Utah resettled around 120 refugees. In October of 2021, we received over 100 new arrivals—due to the US exit from Afghanistan and its aftermath. Afghan newcomers along with our scheduled refugee arrivals from overseas have exceeded 200 from November 2021 to February 2022. With this significant expansion of our resettling caseload, we have with it an essential need for capacity-building to ensure we provide the necessary resources for all our clients. With this overall increase in client youth, our Refugee Youth VISTA will build up our Youth Services program in our target areas of education, evaluation and assessment, early learning outreach, and secondary education resource development. In addition, our Youth Mentoring program will enroll 40 youth from October 2021-October 2022 with continued monitoring through September 2023. Our Refugee Youth VISTA will build on our mentor training, develop parent engagement strategies, and compile local resource guides to increase positive outcomes and success for our mentoring matches. This VISTA position is a part of Catholic Charities USA’s Family Strengthening Program, a national intermediary project.

Member Duties : The Refugee Youth VISTA will develop a comprehensive outreach strategy for staff to educate refugee families about the importance of early childhood education. To promote this, the VISTA will track and compile data to gauge the effectiveness of this outreach strategy. This strategy will communicate the benefits of high-quality early learning programs to refugee families and lead to enrolling the refugee children in those high-quality preschool programs. The VISTA will create and share information with the CCS Early Childhood Navigator about early childhood education in a culturally relevant and appropriate way. This individual will coordinate workshops and outreach events for families who are interested in learning more about early childhood education. They will create partnerships with existing organizations and youth programs to provide additional resources to our youth and parents. Refugee Youth Services VISTA will not have tasks working directly with clients (youth and families).
