*MTCC International Rescue Committee VISTA

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) helps people affected by humanitarian crises to survive, recover and rebuild their lives. This project will seek to strengthen existing relationships with partners in the community and establish new ones. This project will support existing efforts by refining and expanding two crucial volunteer programs that have suffered due to the COVID19 pandemic, as well as expand the International Rescue Committee’s financial and technology literacy programs. Digital and financial literacy skills are a foundational skill that newly arrived refugees in Missoula need to start developing as quickly as possible. This VISTA project seeks to build a toolkit and volunteer force that will help newly arrived refugee families in Missoula to develop digital and financial literacy skills. These tool kits and volunteer efforts will target both school-aged youth and adults, setting the stage for academic success in refugee youth and increasing access to college. Montana Campus Compact (MTCC) serves as the intermediary for this project. MTCC is a CEO-led coalition of colleges and universities that support civic engagement, service learning, and volunteerism across the state. Every year we place cohorts of full-time, part-time, and summer AmeriCorps members with schools, colleges, nonprofits, and government agencies in Montana. The AmeriCorps projects we facilitate increase educational equity, break down barriers between higher education and community organizations, and address the root causes of poverty in communities across the state.
