22-23 YMCA of Greater Seattle, Youth Legislature Advocate

Across the country and around the world, the Y empowers young people to be confident and engaged global citizens who work to strengthen their communities and create positive social change. Youth and Government is one of the oldest teen leadership programs in Washington State. In the mock legislative program, youth from 8th-12th grade have the opportunity to learn new ways to share their perspectives while drafting their own mock legislation. The school-year program culminates with a state-wide conference in Olympia where teens from across the state will debate local and national issues with their peers. (https://www.seattleymca.org/programs/youthprograms/youthandgovernment/youthlegislature) Research has consistently shown that participating in communities and being part of collaborative groups benefits peoples' mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Youth engagement can lead to increased academic performance and improved social-emotional well-being. It helps young people build skills and networks that are valued in the workplace, and can thus be a source of economic mobility. When youth feel empowered to take action, and when they see their efforts achieve positive change, it can have a profound and lasting impact. Members would serve as Advisors to support distinct student groups within the YMCA of Greater Seattle's service area and educate students about parliamentary procedure and the legislative process. Advisors are recommended to have experience and passion for growing youth leaders and advocates as they provide appropriate adult leadership and direction to the student groups. This position is contingent upon funding. This position is open until filled.
