For more information about the OHA AmeriCorps Project, please visit: http://healthoregon.org/vista. Selections are made on a rolling basis. The last day to submit an application is July 31, 2022. Josephine County is a rural county serving approximately 85,000 individuals in approximately 5 cities. Josephine County Public Health (JCPH) department is small but mighty, comprised of approximately 30 employees and 7 departments. It’s a community that struggles with health issues, as well as having a higher poverty rate than the national average. While challenging, these circumstances make working in public health here so rewarding. It is a scenic wonderland in the Rogue Valley, we have many hiking and biking trails, parks and camp sites, as well as easy access to the Rogue River and we’re a quick drive to the ocean. The seven departments at JCPH are environmental health, WIC, clinic, vital records, animal shelter, emergency preparedness, and solid waste. Almost all efforts of the Emergency Preparedness department benefit those experiencing poverty. Department actions include, educating, training, and preparing citizens, public health, and medical providers for a disaster, responding to disasters by leading communication, mass care, fatality management efforts, mass dispensing of antidotes and so much more. A successful AmeriCorps member for this position will be tenacious, detail-oriented, invested in learning and growing, and comfortable working independently. This position has the opportunity to be what the volunteer makes it, we are interested in benefiting from the member’s skills, abilities, and interests in the best way possible.
