Harney County Health Department is a small health department serving a rural population of 7,000 people. We are truly a family, our staff have been working together for many years and strive to serve our population to the best of our abilities. We serve the entire population by providing support for WIC, Oregon Health Plan signup, Immunizations, Family Planning, Syringe Exchange, and other programs. We aim to alleviate poverty in our county by connecting people with services that address poverty and food insecurity, including Medicaid signup, food bank referral, and other services. We have many groups who work to alleviate poverty but no one group or individual whose focus is on that population. In Harney County, most rural people’s drinking water is from wells. Many are tainted with heavy metals and drought causes lack of water. The member will address these issues through research and education. In addition, the member will focus on health inequity and help the department address poverty within the county. The OHA AmeriCorps VISTA Partnership Project is committed to building a diverse workforce to strengthen our work in Oregon communities. We value applicants who can bring lived experience to further OHA’s strategic goal to eliminate health inequities by 2030. With the innovative public health work happening in Oregon, Burns is a wonderful place to explore a future in public health.
