AmeriCorps VISTA in Climate Change at Rowan University

Rowan University seeks to be a leader in the area of climate change education and advocacy. Our College of Education places access, success, and equity at the center of its teacher preparation work. Our School of Earth & Environment and Edelman Fossil Park and Museum offer tremendous educational resources to inspire and inform a climate and sustainability curriculum. Our goal for the first year of this project would be to understand the process of designing and implementing new content in response to State-mandated curricular standards and to identify climate change content experts to work with our College of Education and school district partners.

Member Duties : The Climate Change VISTA member for Rowan University will work closely with faculty in the College of Education who are involved in educational policy and regulation, curriculum development, and assessment to learn how mandated curriculum standards are translated into the classroom. In addition to understanding and describing these logistical aspects, the VISTA member will examine the values and objectives of climate change educators and advocates across the disciplines. This will involve networking with the first cadre of Rowan’s new Catalysts for Sustainability faculty to discuss how they will approach their charge of developing an integrated vision for sustainability research and education at the college level. The Climate Change VISTA member will be uniquely positioned to explore perspectives on how the K-12 curriculum in general and the high school curriculum in particular can inspire younger generations to become leaders for environmental responsibility.
