Stewards VISTA: Freshwaters Illustrated

Freshwaters Illustrated has created unique and immersive educational video, storytelling, and illustrative tools for educators since 2003, with an emphasis on college educators. Our new VISTA-assisted ‘Water Teachers’ program will begin to target K-12 teachers with a focus on underserved teachers who have not historically used our resources as members. The outcome we are working toward is not only an increased student literacy in science and conservation of freshwater ecosystems, but a greater awareness for their societal importance and benefits for diverse communities (e.g., drinking water, healthy fisheries, recreational and spiritual opportunities), and familiarity with the career opportunities that exist in these fields, particularly for rural environments and communities that rely on natural resource- and agriculture-based economies. VISTA would work towards the preparation and launch of this program. By engaging K-12 Teachers through this more focused program, we are working toward building watershed, science, and conservation literacy in communities across the US, along with an increased awareness of opportunities for careers, volunteerism, and community health and sustainability through the protection and restoration of our most precious and valuable natural resource. As a small nonprofit organization, this VISTA supported project will provide a significant increase in our capacity to serve communities throughout the US through the youth educators who are woven into the fabric of every local community.
