CoF NAMI Fairbanks Development Coordinator VISTA
An estimated 12,330 people in the FNSB have a mental illness. Approximately 2,700 have a serious mental illness that substantially interferes with major life activities. Nationally, 1 in 5 people are living with a mental illness, affecting workplace safety and the general well being of the community at large. NAMI Fairbanks is the only agency in the Tanana Valley that offers evidence-based education for family members who are seeking information in order to support their loved one in their mental health recovery. Through NAMI classes, support groups, and presentations, participants are able to increase their ability to manage difficult situations, navigate mental health systems, or talk with someone who is suicidal or displaying a need for mental health support. As education on mental health issues is increased, the level of stigma decreases. stigma has a paralyzing effect on individuals, preventing them from reaching out for help. Ending this stigma is paramount to securing the mental health and safety of our Tanana Valley residents. Mental illness is not a terminal diagnosis. Consumers who receive mental health support and education gain strength and confidence in their recovery. They can become the greatest advocates for others, and maintain fulfilling meaningful lives. NAMI Fairbanks provides this much needed support and education. The AmeriCorps VISTA program in Fairbanks is sponsored through the City of Fairbanks (CoF) Mayor's Office. This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, for 1 year. VISTAs receive a monthly living allowance of $1,462 which is paid bi-weekly. At the end of service, they also have the choice between an education award of $6,895 or a cash stipend of $1,800. The VISTA will work directly at NAMI Fairbanks.
