*MTCC Climate Resilience Cohort - Flatehead Lakers

Since 1958, the Flathead Lakers’ mission has been to protect clean water, healthy ecosystems, and a lasting quality of life in the Flathead watershed. The Flathead Lakers’ approach is to encourage land and water stewardship, broaden the constituency for responsible and thoughtful land use planning and resource management, and build partnerships to more effectively address conservation priorities so that our communities can absorb growth and provide economic opportunities while maintaining our special natural heritage and quality of life for future generations. The rapid development of Flathead County has reached a point that many can hardly afford to keep roofs over their heads. Solutions to our housing problems necessitate higher density housing and finding properties that don’t command top dollar. As such, many people, specifically those experiencing poverty, become more vulnerable to such impacts as wildfires and flooding, with little means to respond individually. In assessing outreach and communications around the Living in the Flathead Guide, the VISTA member will pay special attention to at least one priority topic to determine implementation barriers or communication needs of lower income people and more vulnerable locales. We will also strengthen coordination and streamline communications, now spread among numerous groups in the valley, to more effectively reach target audiences. Montana Campus Compact (MTCC) serves as the intermediary for this project. MTCC is a CEO-led coalition of colleges and universities that support civic engagement, service learning, and volunteerism across the state. Every year we place cohorts of full-time, part-time, and summer AmeriCorps members with schools, colleges, nonprofits, and government agencies in Montana. The AmeriCorps projects we facilitate increase educational equity, break down barriers between higher education and community organizations, and address the root causes of poverty in communities across the state.

Member Duties : The VISTA will work with Flathead Climate Resilience workgroup and 20 partners to assess implementation barriers of communication needs of lower income communities. The VISTA will bring partners together to improve coordination and collaboration efforts around land and water stewardship, outreach, and communications. The VISTA will develop strategic outreach to encourage landscape and community resilience in the Flathead Watershed. The VISTA will use stewardship practices and recommendations highlighted in the Living in the Flathead Guide, to identify outreach needs and opportunities by piloting one priority topic in the Guide (e.g. water, fires, health) to identify appropriate audiences, underserved communities at risk, and develop targeted outreach to implement resilience strategies. The VISTA will identify new stakeholders, existing outreach, communication outlets, gaps and opportunities, and collaborative opportunities across sectors.
