'22-'23 Volunteer Training & Communications Coordinator

The Pierce County MRC is a well-established unit of 735+ medical and non-medical volunteers housed at Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department in Tacoma, Washington. The MRC is a registered nonprofit and free clinic experiencing rapid growth. This VISTA will work with our leadership team to support volunteer engagement and program development. Over the next year, there will be many continued improvements coming to the MRC including new engagement and retention strategies, team development, and training opportunities. The MRC increasingly serves the people of Pierce County in emergencies. Examples of emergency response include providing homeless health services, communicable disease prevention and testing, and mobile clinic operations. With recent changes across the South Puget Sound such as rising costs of living and more people experiencing homelessness, the need for highly trained, engaged volunteers to mobilize and respond to public health emergencies increases every year. The MRC has served as a community outreach organization since 2008, promoting emergency preparedness in communities, hosting annual immunization clinics at shelters, food banks, and meal sites, and offering wound care and wellness clinics at emergency shelters and encampments for people experiencing homelessness. As we continue to receive requests for response, the need to improve our organization grows. This VISTA will implement, improve, and build on the services we provide while gaining valuable skills in leadership, public health, coordination, and communication.
