Mental Health Association of Maryland-Connections Program
The Mental Health Association of Maryland operates several programs that promote mental wellbeing, quality and access to services. The programs to be supported by the VISTA member are the Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) program and the Children’s Mental Health Matters Program. MHFA is an evidence-based standardized training program that teaches members of the public how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders by improving course participants' knowledge, attitudes and behaviors related to mental health challenges. MHFA is listed in SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidenced Based Programs and Practices. Like CPR, the MHFA training is designed to equip parents, teachers, and students over the age of 15 with knowledge and skill enabling them to intervene through a 5-step action plan. There are curricula specific to adults working with youth (yMHFA), and a teen curriculum (tMHFA). The trainer time and materials costs for the MHFA and the MHFA curriculum are funded by a variety of sources, such as MSDE and Behavioral Health Systems Baltimore. Private sources of support are needed to expand the reach of this program into more schools. The VISTA member will assist with the outreach to schools and with the prospecting and applications for support to a variety of funding sources. The Children’s Mental Health Matters Campaign is a 20-year-oldannual project of MHAMD, which culminates with activities in each school jurisdiction during May –Mental Health Month; and specifically, Children’s Mental Health Week –the first week in May.

Member Duties : The VISTA member will expand the scale, impact, and resource-leveraging ability of the Children’s Mental Health Program in schools in four jurisdictions identified by MSDE as economically under-resourced, where MHAMD’s Children’s Program already has a strong presence. The VISTA member will support expansion of community partnerships in four local school districts, assist with securing cash and in-kind resources to engage and retain diverse representation of participant schools, with activities focused on creating a year-long focus on supporting children. The VISTA member will create partnerships with the Community Schools personnel in those jurisdictions. In addition to establishing Community Classes for Mental Health First Aid in those schools, the VISTA member will identify and utilize outreach mechanisms in each school or jurisdiction to better reach parents, faculty, etc. The VISTA member will develop and implement an evaluation model that will measure the impact of the program.
