’22 Eloise's Cooking Pot Food Bank Summer Associate(MADF) #2

Eloise's Cooking Pot (ECP) removes all barriers to nutritious food access for low-income people experiencing food insecurity. A program of the Making A Difference Foundation, ECP is the largest independently owned and operated food bank in Pierce County with the largest delivery service. ECP offers three main services: 1) The drop-in food site is located on the east side of Tacoma known as a food desert. Here, our diverse client base receives fresh, culturally appropriate, and special diet foods that help them sustain a balanced diet. It is open five days a week, Tuesday through Saturday, 10:30 am to 4:00 pm, and set up to function just like a grocery store. All food is free to those who visit and clients come in and "shop" for food, similar to going into their local grocery store. Clients get to select the food items they want instead of receiving the same food everyone else gets (or other food banks give out). We do this so clients get the food items they need, want, and will not waste. We offer fresh produce, meats, grains, dairy items, prepackaged food, as well as culturally sensitive food choices for clients of diverse ethnic backgrounds. On average, each household gets an about 75 lbs. of food per visit and they can visit as often as needed. 2) The second service is home-delivery which provides food box service directly where clients need it most. The delivery truck is out making deliveries during the same hours the onsite location is open and clients can receive food whenever they need it. We also provide outreach to individuals experiencing homelessness on the streets when the delivery truck is out, handing out backpacks full individual-serving foods, drinks, and other personal care goods. 3) Finally, the third service is our pop-up food bank which makes food deliveries to areas in Pierce County. We “pop up” at local churches, parks, libraries, low-income apartments as well as community events with the planned areas being notified in advance.
