'22 Mother Earth Farm Summer Associate at EFN #3

Emergency Food Network (EFN) is the main emergency food distributor in Pierce County. We partner with over 75 food pantries, hot meal sites, and shelters to provide them with diverse and nutritious food to feed our neighbors. EFN also operates Mother Earth Farm, an 8-acre farm in the Puyallup River Valley, to meet the need for fresh food in the community. Mother Earth Farm uses organic practices to grow roughly 80,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables for our partners. With an emphasis on vegetable production, Mother Earth Farm also has an orchard, beehives, and flower garden. We grow and harvest throughout the year, using two high tunnels and three caterpillar tunnels over the winter. With only two full-time staff, the farm relies on the work of seasonal employees, interns, and numerous volunteers from our surrounding community. While the majority of the food EFN distributes is donated food, either by grocers or other community partners, we are not always able to rely on the quantity and nutritional quality of these foods. Growing food also allows us to respond to guest’s needs. Our Partner Programs communicate these needs to EFN, and we use this information when deciding what to grow. As a result, we grow more than 100 varieties of culturally appropriate produce such as tatsoi, bok choy, tomatillos, and cabbage. EFN chooses to use organic practices at Mother Earth Farm because it is better for the health of those growing and harvesting the food, the health of the land, and results in higher quality produce for our partner food pantries. Our partner food pantries are able to receive the produce directly from the farm at peak freshness. Produce is typically available to guests within 48 hours of harvest bringing the principles of the farm-to-table movement to the emergency food system. By supplying pantries with produce grown at Mother Earth Farm, food pantry guests have improved access to nutritious food and are enabled to live a healthier life.

Member Duties : 100% In-Person Opportunity. Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM, 40 hours per week. Mother Earth Farm Summer Associates will serve alongside our Farm Managers and Seasonal Assistants to learn about and carry out all aspects of organic fruit and vegetable production including seeding, cultivating, transplanting, weeding, harvesting and packing. These members also serve alongside community volunteers and will be responsible for maintaining a welcoming volunteer environment, giving direction, and answering questions when needed. These activities will be hands-on, intensive, and deeply impactful for the community. This summer term aligns with a crucial growing period at Mother Earth Farm. These Summer Associates will play a large role in maintaining the health of our plants in the heat of the summer, when weed maintenance and harvesting is most needed. Their contribution will make all the difference in our ability to meet our goals for fresh food distribution in 2022.
