Youth Recreation Development VISTA, HUB Sports Center
This project is supervised by HUB Sports Center, which provides space, events, and programs to support the development of life skills for youth in the greater Spokane Valley area through play. This project aims to create outdoor fields and programming for youth that is accessible year-round. Removing barriers to access safe outdoor play areas will increase the availability and opportunity for play and activity, which helps low-income and disadvantaged youth break the cycle of poverty by improving their mental, emotional and physical health throughout the year. Studies have concluded that youth involved in physical activity do better in school and have lower levels of depression and self-derogation. This project will also develop an after-school teen center for students at neighboring Selkirk Middle School, where 23% of students are considered economically disadvantaged and 21.6% qualify for free or reduced lunch. Research led by Spokane County identified in 2015 that Spokane Valley needed additional fields to support youth health and development. No new fields have been developed since then, and this project will help meet that community need. This position is in Spokane County, Washington, about 20 miles west of Idaho and 110 miles south of the Canadian border. Benefits include $575 biweekly living allowance. VISTA members who successfully complete the year receive their choice of either a Segal Education Award (valued at approximately $6,195) or an $1,800 cash stipend. AmeriCorps VISTA is the only AmeriCorps program where you can earn federal non-competitive eligibility, giving you an edge in the federal hiring process. All members in our program receive access to the CliftonStrengths assessment as a benefit of service and join a cohort of VISTA members throughout Spokane in professional and personal development opportunities. Additionally, the member placed at this site will receive mileage reimbursement or a bus pass for service-related travel.
