Youth Program Development VISTA, Spokane County United Way

This project is supervised by Spokane County United Way, which aims to provide safe homes free of child abuse, neglect, and domestic violence; increase high school graduation rates for every student in our community; and prevent hunger and homelessness in Spokane through partnership and philanthropy. The goal of this project is to create an equitable ecosystem for youth by developing a high-quality out-of-school-time intermediary program to support youth in Spokane’s West Central neighborhood and strengthen partnerships between existing service providers in the neighborhood. By expanding and strengthening programs to low-income youth who may not otherwise have access to out-of-school-time enrichment activities, we are taking steps to close the opportunity gap and break the cycle of poverty by ensuring youth are supported beyond the classroom. This project will also identify ways to ensure the voices of youth in West Central Spokane are centered in the development and operations of youth programming in their community. This position is in Spokane, in Eastern Washington, about 20 miles west of Idaho and 110 miles south of the Canadian border. Benefits include $575 biweekly living allowance. VISTA members who successfully complete the year receive their choice of either a Segal Education Award (valued at approximately $6,195) or an $1,800 cash stipend. AmeriCorps VISTA is the only AmeriCorps program where you can earn federal non-competitive eligibility, giving you an edge in the federal hiring process. All members in our program receive access to the CliftonStrengths assessment as a benefit of service and join a cohort of VISTA members throughout Spokane in professional and personal development opportunities. Additionally, the member placed at this project will receive mileage reimbursement or a bus pass for service-related travel.

Member Duties : This is the second year of a 3-year VISTA project. The VISTA member will engage stakeholders to design and develop an intermediary program to fill gaps in youth support services in Spokane’s West Central neighborhood. In convening this stakeholder group, the VISTA member will also strengthen a network of community partners with shared goals for supporting youth in under-resourced neighborhoods within Spokane. This engagement will allow the VISTA to design and develop a program intended to support the community partners, staff, volunteers, and youth participating in the program, with a focus on creating strategies to integrate youth voice in program development and operations. Additionally, the member placed at this project will research grant opportunities to sustain the program and support stipends for youth stakeholders.
