2022/23 Professional Development Coordinator, The Oaks

The goal of the VISTA program is to build capacity at The Oaks to serve a diverse group of students and families. By creating streamlined systems to support teachers, and better communicate and build relationships with donors, VISTAs members will help The Oaks to support students, especially those families facing economic challenges. We seek candidates that are mission-driven, self-motivated, and idea-inspired. Ideal applicants are seeking a quality learning experience with significant responsibility alongside seasoned education and fundraising professionals. The Oaks has hosted 25 VISTAs over 8 years! Former Oaks VISTAs have gone on to careers in communications, nonprofit management, fundraising, and research due to their robust experiences at The Oaks. The Oaks is a Pre-K through 8th-grade Christ-centered school with three campuses in Indianapolis, close to the Monon Trail, multiple city parks, and vibrant downtown communities. We serve an intentionally diverse student body - both racially and socioeconomically. Approximately 40 percent of students are Black, 40 percent are white, and 20 percent are Latino, Asian, Biracial, or Multiracial. Fifty percent of the 1,045 students live in low-income households, and The Oaks provides over $3 million in need-based scholarships. This commitment to creating a balanced mixed-race and mixed-income community since 1998 is a model that research has shown to benefit all.

Member Duties : We are seeking a VISTA member to streamline the wide array of professional learning resources we have available for teachers. Focused on a variety of topics, these resources help teachers grow in their ability to provide effective student and family support (i.e. training on trauma-informed care, unconscious bias, and social-emotional learning). The Oaks has grown from a handful of teachers to almost 200 faculty and staff in a short amount of time. This VISTA member will work closely with the Director of Academic Programs to ensure training resources are well-organized and easily accessible to all teachers. This work will not only help to attract and retain high-quality faculty and staff, but also help to better support economically disadvantaged students and families. Ideal VISTA candidates would have an interest in gaining valuable experience at a growing, mission-driven school.
