NYC Free Tax Prep Capacity Building VISTA
 
 
 
Tax season can be an important moment for many New Yorkers who may rely on their tax refund to make ends meet. NYC Free Tax Prep volunteers provide trusted, professional filing at no cost for thousands of New Yorkers with low to moderate incomes each year so that they keep every penny of their refund. The VISTA will lead a citywide effort to recruit, train, and engage volunteers. Every volunteer this VISTA helps to recruit has a real impact on New Yorkers’ lives. By the end of the season, they complete about 50 tax returns, helping their neighbors claim more than $80,000 in refunds and tax preparation fee savings. The NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) protects and enhances the daily economic lives of New Yorkers to create thriving communities. Within DCWP, OFE focuses on initiatives that support New Yorkers and communities with low incomes in building wealth and improving their financial health. OFE is the first local government initiative in the country with the mission to educate, empower, and protect New Yorkers and neighborhoods with low incomes so they can build assets and make the most of their financial resources. This VISTA position is a part of the NYC VISTA program, a group of 25+ VISTA members serving in New York City Government agencies supporting their anti-poverty work. The NYC VISTA program is administered by NYC Service, a division of the Office of the Mayor. This position is supervised directly by a city agency staff member and will be a part of the larger NYC VISTA community. Member Duties : We seek a VISTA who is committed to improving the lives of New Yorkers with low and moderate incomes and has a strong interest in building capacity within a city agency. This is a dynamic opportunity, and a typical day can range from conducting meetings with providers to understand their volunteer needs, to hosting a orientation webinar, to visiting tax preparation sites to see volunteer management in action. Key Activities Include • Coordinate outreach to prospective volunteers. • Organize information sessions and trainings • Develop resources for providers to engage volunteers • Evaluate the effectiveness of activities Preferred Skills • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. • Excellent conceptual, organizational, and analytical skills. • Strong interpersonal skills. • Ability to work under deadlines, manage multiple assignments, and handle sensitive information. • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
