Nutrition Quality VISTA
 
 
 
The mission of the Department of Homeless Services is: “with our not-for-profit partners, our mission is to prevent homelessness when possible, address street homelessness, provide safe temporary shelter, and connect New Yorkers experiencing homelessness to sustainable housing. We do this with accountability, empathy, and equity.” The VISTA Member will assist the nutritionist in projects to ensure DHS clients receive healthy and safe food. The vista will create or review menus for nutrition compliance, track food safety compliance, and develop solutions to decrease food waste in the shelters. The Vista will assist the medical office in updating the database of shelter-based medical and behavioral health services by collecting information on hours of operation, services provided, and number and type of staff. VISTA applicants with public health or nutrition science degrees are preferred but anyone with an interest in health or nutrition should apply. This VISTA position is a part of the NYC VISTA program, a group of 25+ VISTA members serving in New York City Government agencies supporting their anti-poverty work. The NYC VISTA program is administered by NYC Service, a division of the Office of the Mayor. This position is supervised directly by a city agency staff member and will be a part of the larger NYC VISTA community. Member Duties : The nutrition and health project has four sections. The VISTA will assess meal service at each facility and collect menu and nutrition data by obtaining information about all new shelters meal programs, menus, and nutrient reports. Secondly, the VISTA will monitor compliance with the NYC Food sanitation code by working with new and existing shelters to verify that they have an active food service permit (newly obtained or not expired) and upload the information into BCS. The VISTA will facilitate partnerships between shelters and community organizations to educate clients on nutrition, food safety, healthy cooking, and food budget. Activities in this section include revising and/or creating client handouts and working with the staff in the medical office to add food-related resources to the OMD-developed resource directory. The VISTA will finally also be responsible to work on projects to improve clients access to care.
