Street and Subway Outreach Initiatives VISTA

The New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS) mission is to prevent homelessness when possible, address street homelessness, provide safe temporary shelter, and connect New Yorkers experiencing homelessness to suitable housing. We do this with accountability, empathy, and equity. The VISTA will work with DHS and the Street Homeless Services (SHS) Division which conducts 24/7/365 outreach to unsheltered New Yorkers in coordination with our not-for-profit social services providers. SHS provides an array of services and supports for individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness to assist them in coming off the streets and subways and getting back on their feet through low barrier, specialized services. These services and supports provided include Drop-In Centers, Safe Havens, Stabilization Beds, Street and Subway Outreach. The DHS Executive Office and SHS are looking for VISTA who can work in a fast-paced environment on projects for the Street Homeless Solutions Division. VISTA will support and help to ensure key pieces of Mayoral Street Initiatives are implemented effectively and remain on track. The VISTA chosen for this position will work in the DHS Executive Office and will report to the DHS Chief of Staff. This person will be working directly with Senior leadership of this agency and will be expected to maintain a high level of professionalism and confidentiality in this position. This VISTA position is a part of the NYC VISTA program, a group of 25+ VISTA members serving in New York City Government agencies supporting their anti-poverty work. The NYC VISTA program is administered by NYC Service, a division of the Office of the Mayor. This position is supervised directly by a city agency staff member and will be a part of the larger NYC VISTA community.
