SerVermont- Lake Paran

Paran Recreations serves community members and visitors in the Southshire of Bennington County, VT. Paran Recreations is dedicated to offering positive, healthy, outdoor recreation and learning opportunities for the people who live in our community. We are also the stewards of the Paran Watershed and the lands surrounding Lake Paran. A focus of our work has always been to make these resources welcoming to EVERYONE in our community with an emphasis on low income and at-risk families and children. To this end, we design and offer programming that uses our outdoor resources to enhance the wellbeing of our community and its residents and raise funds to make memberships and programming low cost and/or free. We see nature as a resource for enjoyment, sport, environmental awareness, relaxation, skill building and public health. We have been an invaluable resource during the past 3 years as a result of the COVID epidemic. We are looking to sustain and further develop outdoor education programs for youth in our community. This provides young people with internal and external skills that will contribute to their sense of independence and collective responsibility. These programs will also develop leadership skills targeted to “at risk” youth coming from low income families. We will work with schools to create joint programs that bring students outside and expose young people to the ways in which their lives can be enriched through a deeper connection with nature. Finally, we are also working towards a conservation campaign to #SaveLakeParan from the threats of human induced pollution and invasive species.

Member Duties : Our VISTA member will be an integral member of our organization & our community. Outdoor education is still relatively new for Paran Rec. Developing sustainable & meaningful programming will be the main focus. In order to do this, they will be involved with our board of directors & supervised by our director who previously served as an AmeriCorps VISTA. In addition, they will interact & work in collaboration with other community members who represent partner organizations that support at risk & low income youth/families. The other responsibility will be to continue outreach and education for our #SaveLakeParan conservation campaign aimed to preserve the Paran Creek Watershed from pollution and invasive species. The VISTA will be a pivotal player in ensuring the health of Lake Paran so that our community can continue to enjoy the benefits of our cherished natural resource for generations to come.
