BMVP - Community-Wide Housing Strategy Initiative

HomeFront’s mission is to elevate the quality of life in our community by creating innovative, affordable, and sustainable neighborhoods. According to 2020 Census information, Billings has over 117,000 residents, 10% of whom are living below the poverty level. There are over 6,200 households on Billings waiting lists, and several more issues regarding housing stability exist in our area. Additionally, with the changes to the housing market in our area, housing issues are still a serious concern for people that are unhoused and / or low-income in our community. As of now, there is no comprehensive housing strategy that has been developed for our area. Various groups have proposed changes, and one study suggested that Billings “stakeholders cited a need for more coordinated activity across the metro area’s community of nonprofits, economic development actors, lenders, and developers to address affordable housing needs.” They also noted that “stakeholders believed such a coordinated effort could address a perceived lack of understanding of the particular needs of Billings’ low-income renters.” In creating a housing strategy for the community, we will create opportunities for a variety of housing which will help people find, afford, and maintain quality housing. The creation of a sustainable strategy will also allow the City to address housing needs and crises in a way that is meaningful and meets those needs. As a result of a comprehensive action plan, an increasing number of households will be able to obtain and maintain quality housing and create a stronger community. Housing is a basic need. When housing strategies are implemented, communities can develop best practices to ensure that residents have affordable, safe, and decent housing. Community members are more equipped to achieve success in acquiring a healthy lifestyle and the opportunity to move out of poverty when access to housing increases.
